Hunting with my brother in Glenwood Springs Colorado I arrowed this elk at 33-yards on the second to last day of our hunt.  It took us all night to hike the meat back to our camp. 

Glenwood Springs Colorado Area 43 Muzzleloader Mule Deer

It was the third day of the 2005 muzzleloader season. My brother and I had hiked up to the top of the mountain before daylight and were in position. When daylight hit the wind changed directions and we started working our way around the back side of the mountain looking for a good deer. As the morning progressed we saw several deer, but no bucks. On our way down to lower elevation we found a 4 x 5 elk skull that was in great shape so we strapping it on my pack and started back down toward camp. At 1:30pm and now at 10,000 feet we were standing 80 yards from the biggest mule deer I had ever laid eyes on. Carefully we moved into position to get a clear shot, but the buck was long gone. A minute or so later the buck I’m holding in the picture appeared 90 yards from us. Without hesitation I lined up the fiber optic sights on the buck’s chest and the rest is history. We spent the rest of the day packing the deer five miles back to camp.
